My Fantastic New Purchase

I bought nested dolls this week from Mister Hope, an illustrator whose work I instantly fell in love with at Thought Bubble in November last year.

When I saw he was painting these dolls last week I knew I wanted them and eagerly waited for them to be posted in his Etsy shop.

If you like these nesting monsters as much as I do then you should check out Mister Hope’s website and have a look through his gallery.

Close Ups!

Boredom Doodle

Sometimes I find myself drawing just weird shapes that happen to vaguely look like they’re meant to be something in particular :)

A Little bit of Colour

I coloured in a few of my tags a couple of months ago and have been meaning to show you them on here since then. My laptop was too old to allow me to do anything in Photoshop in less than an hour though so I couldn’t find the time to sit down and post them.

New laptop though so here they are!

New Tags

Not done any of these for you in a while!

Sorry about the crappy scan quality, I think my scanner is on its way out.

Pictoplasma Berlin 2011

At the start of April (6-10th to be precise), I attended the Pictoplasma Festival in Berlin with Mark Adamson and Will Adams.  The festival consisted of a very densely packed 4 days with a character walk and lectures from 25 illustrators, artists and people involved in character design in one way or another.

Character Walk

The Character Walk was hosted in 25 exhibition spaces/galleries around a small area of Berlin Mitte.

I really enjoyed seeing the work of so many talented artists and having the opportunity to speak to a few of them as we went around, particularly 3753% Tordal who we spent a while with talking about their work and customising boxes for Papp.

Instead of talking about them in depth here, I will try to write posts later on about the artists that inspired me the most or had interesting things to say in their lectures.

Characters in Motion

Each day started with the Characters in Motion screenings, showcasing some brilliant animation work selected by the organisers.

Some of my favourites included:

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On by Dean Fleischer Camp
Pixels by Patrick Jean
How Your Money Works by Musclebeaver
Giant by Céline Desrumaux & Yann Benedi

Doomed by Guillermo García Carsí
Let Go by David Wilson
Babiole by Matray
Logorama by H5

Baltimore Clap by Kristofer Ström
The External World by David OReilly
Umbra by Malcolm Sutherland

Lectures

The lectures ran over three days, from Thursday to Saturday, and were so densely packed together it was difficult to find the time to do anything else (especially since 50% of them ran late).

In this time we heard a number of very different artists speak about their projects, inspiration and work in development.  Again I will come back to the individuals whose work has inspired me or who I believe gave me something to think about!

The Missing Link Show

At the end of the 3 days on the Saturday night there was The Missing Link show, hosted at the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz.

The highlight of this for me was most definitely Motomichi Nakamura, though Dan Deacon’s set was fun to watch from the seats as he encouraged people from the audience to join him on stage and act out a few things whilst he played records.

Motomichi Nakamura’s dark videos in which he uses only red, white and black were the perfect accompaniment to the heavy music that he chose to add to the mix.

All in all the festival was entertaining and fun, so I think I will most likely be trying to get a ticket for next year too.  Roll on doomsday edition Pictoplasma!

Half-dressed Munny

Look what I’m in the process of doing!  All he needs now is a MASSIVE MOUSTACHE AND EYEBROWS.

Things to Come

I’ve been drawing lately but not actually posting it online because I’ve been pretty busy lately.

I had the idea a couple of months ago to start drawing on luggage tags and leaving them in various places.  I bought the tags but didn’t actually get around to drawing on them until Saturday, then didn’t want to leave them anywhere because I was pretty happy with them.

Instead of losing these drawings, I have scanned them and will work on making digital copies in the next week or so.  For now, here are my scans:

Squiddles Exhibition

So on Saturday, Mark and I went down to the Squiddles Exhibition at Walrus Bar in Manchester.  The exhibition was organised by Matt Daniels (AKA Stickypop) in memory of his girlfriend who sadly passed away in July.
As Mark and I are both big fans of Tado, we were eager to get our hands on the prints that they had created for this exhibition.

I ended up buying 3 prints in total by Tado, Aaron Miller and JamFactory; all of whom are designers/illustrators I’ve been following lately and drooling over their work a little.  I’m very happy to have been able to buy some of their prints!

Apologies for the poor quality photos about to follow, I might have to redo them when it’s daylight and I have a better spot to put them in.  For now, shhh.

I also bought myself another Tic Toc Apocalyse Toy from Forbidden Planet which I love.

Take a look:

As for my own illustration you can expect to see at least 10 new drawing pop up in the next week or so as I’ve started my luggage tag project :)

3.0 & A Series Of Error Fixing, plus Mr Gauky

I’ve updated to WordPress 3.0! Huzzah.  This means my list for things to learn about WordPress just got longer, plus I’ve made a nice little mess taking chunks of other themes and mashing them together to make mine look shiny nice.

Oh well.

Today’s Inspiration: Mr Gauky

I just stumbled across this guy’s work and I have to say it’s definitely made my day.
